Introduction

The Department of Agricultural Economics was established in 1998 within the Faculty of Agriculture Rawalakot, University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir to provide teaching, research and public service in the application of economics to issues and problems in the agriculture and food sectors. The Department of Agricultural Economics prepares students to analyze economic problems systematically and objectively, and to come up with practical solutions. It seeks to equip students for a wide range of roles in the private sector as well as in the public sector. The faculty keeps contacts, with students after they graduate, and seeks to reinforce work with personal guidance, useful research studies and training for their associates. The function of agricultural economics is to deal with the economic and social problems of agriculture which arise, for the most part, in adapting the industry to technological progress and population growth. In discharging these functions teaching comes first, followed closely by research and community service. In teaching we have a duty in making courses available to all students designed to point up the economic and social side of agriculture, particularly the implications of progress. This is in addition to the primary function of training students who will make agricultural economics a profession. In research we need to study the true productivity of human and capital resources used in agriculture.
